Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is quietly becoming one of Uganda’s greatest medical threats. While awareness campaigns often blame patients who self-medicate or pharmacies and drug shops that dispense antibiotics without prescriptions, the deeper and more uncomfortable truth lies within our own hospitals. A systemic culture of Doctorism where clinical decisions are made based on authority rather than evidence has helped entrench reckless prescribing practices. Combined with the chronic underinvestment in medical laboratories, this culture has turned health facilities into silent factories for drug resistant infections.
