About the Webinar
Aflatoxin contamination in staple foods and animal feeds is a severe, yet often overlooked, public health and economic crisis in Africa. This free Continuing Professional Development (CPD) webinar aims to address this multifaceted issue by bringing together experts to discuss laboratory detection, health impacts, prevention strategies, and necessary policy interventions.
The Challenge: Aflatoxin Contamination
What it is: Highly toxic substances produced by molds (Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus) that contaminate staples like maize, grains, rice, and animal products.
Health Impacts: Exposure leads to liver cancer, impaired immunity, childhood stunting, malnutrition, and increased susceptibility to disease.
Root Causes: Climate change, poor harvesting, inadequate drying, and improper storage, compounded by a lack of surveillance, lab capacity, and public awareness.
The Bottom Line: Aflatoxins are not just an agricultural issue; they are a major public health and food safety emergency requiring coordinated, multidisciplinary action.
